Pictured above, just by looking at a photograph of Jyl's work doesn't even do them justice!!! Check out the close up shots of her sculpted, Waldoboro objects.

Jyl also shared a fun plaid mug rug pattern with us that would look amazing in any home and a great gift idea for sure!

There were a few catch phrases Jyl frequently used during our three day class that will stick with us for quite sometime . . . . .

LIGHT
BRIGHT
DARK
DULL
ANSWER BACK

In these two rugs Jyl explained that every rug should have a LIGHT, BRIGHT, DARK & DULL color combination. As for the rug on the left, the cream, taupe and blue colors could represent the LIGHT, the red jewel tone would represent the BRIGHT, brown and black take care of the DARK elements and the green along with various lighter values of blue and red help create the DULL aspect.

The bright red used in the center of the rug is a very bold statement piece. It must be used elsewhere within the rug or the viewers' eyes would tend to stay focused on the red and lose interest quickly in the rest of the rug design. Since the bright red was ANSWERED BACK in the four corners, as well as, part of the border it totally worked. If you examine each block a little closer, a lighter value of red was incorporated to add a little bit of spice to enhance the color schemes within.

The woven hooked rug on the right utilized dip dyeing to create an ombre effect for each color of wool. This creates depth within her rug displaying highlighted and shadow areas. The orange, blue, green, brown and cream colors all originated from the wool she used in her border. All of these colors ANSWER BACK with her border to create a cohesive element. Can you see how the LIGHT, BRIGHT, DARK & DULL color combination Jyl uses captivates the viewer's attention? These two catch phrases are such a helpful piece of advice to create awe inspiring artwork!
