NOVEMBER

TIP OF THE MONTH

NORITA AND BUNNY FRAME.jpg

This month, Norita Blue presented her William Morris rug, titled "The Forest tapestry (detail of the hare) by William Morris, 1887."    Back in May Norita took a class at the Mohawk Rug Hooking School from Vivily Powers, owner of Colorama Wool in Connecticut.  Vivily had dyed all of the wool for this rug.

Norita started color planning her rug with a William Morris wallpaper sample, a printout of the rabbit design and colored pencils.  Her tip of the month was to hook the items in the foreground first, such as the floral items in front of the rabbit and to hook a "Sacrificial Border" of three rows.  Her reason for hooking this type of border is to help anchor the piece.

Take a closer look at the larger, scrolling leaves and the directional hooking Norita added to show movement.  The rabbit's face was a little tricky and wanted to use some of her own wool, but her selection didn't quite look right and reverted back to the original wool swatches Vivily dyed for her.  Another issue that arose was how to make the rabbit's ears look like they have some dimension to them so she used a little of her background wool within the bunny's ears which worked out perfectly.
