TIP OF THE MONTH

MARCH

MARY MARGARET RUG_edited.jpg

During the March meeting, Mary Margaret presented a Cathy Stephan rug called, “Old Jack”. Her rug was a perfect interpretation of a primitive hooked pattern in both the design and color plan. It was created using all hand torn strips and recycled wools that Mary Margaret collected over the years and over-dyed using a “wash” of brown dye. She mentioned the hardest thing to hook was getting the striations throughout the background. After she was asked by one the our guild members, Mary Margaret shared her story of how she got started in rug hooking. An introduction to an herb society led the path to discovering rug hooking through one the society members. Mary Margaret and her husband made a trip to New England to visit Joan Moshimer and purchased what she needed to get started! She also mentioned she hooked for years under the tutelage of Barb Carroll. However, because Barb did the color planning, Mary Margaret admitted she really didn’t understand the color planned process until she worked with Cathy Stephan.
